Moviegoing In Philadelphia: A Collective Research Project by Penn Undergraduates
January 2022
Home to Siegmund Lubin (1851-1923), one of the most important early filmmakers and film exhibitors, Philadelphia has a rich history in film exhibition and moviegoing, which has received little scholarly attention compared to other major US cities such as New York and Chicago. With contributions by University of Pennsylvania students taking Dr. Chenshu Zhou's undergraduate seminar “Film Exhibition and Moviegoing,” this site is dedicated to telling the story of moviegoing in Philadelphia by examining its historical theaters, neighborhoods, and audiences.
