Congratulations to ARTH grad alum Abigail Rapoport (PhD’22) on the recent opening of her breathtaking exhibition, “The Book of Esther in the Age of Rembrandt” at the Jewish Museum, NYC! As the Museum’s Curator of Judaica, Abigail organized a spectacular display featuring over 120 works including paintings, prints, and drawings by Rembrandt van Rijn, Aert de Gelder, Jan Steen, and other artists,  presented alongside Jewish ceremonial art and decorative craft objects related to the holiday and the Esther story. This exhibition, on view through August 10, 2025, examines how the biblical story of Queen Esther served as a popular source of inspiration for Rembrandt and his contemporaries during a time of vibrant cultural exchange in 17th-century Netherlands.

“The Book of Esther in the Age of Rembrandt” is co-organized by the Jewish Museum, New York, and the North Carolina Museum of Art, Raleigh.
