SUB ROSA, an exhibition by ARTH Major Irma Flóra Kiss, is a fictive recreation of Anne Boleyn’s private chambers the night before her execution. Inspired by the Latin phrase "under the rose," which denotes secrecy or privacy, this multimedia exhibition imagines the hours preceding Anne’s execution on charges of high treason. A vacant bedroom enjoins viewers to journey through the interior world of one of history’s most prominent victims of gendered violence, and to reflect on the difficulties of commemorating suffering without aestheticizing it. SUB ROSA was supported by the Sachs Program for Arts Innovation.
