Aslı Özyar, Boğaziçi University and Director of Tarsus-Gözlükule Excavations
In the 8th-9th c. the Abbasid elite began to use the millennia-old mound of Gözlükule in Tarsus, Cilicia, to set up their residential structures. These medieval Islamic levels were first uncovered during the Bryn Mawr College excavations of the site in the 1930’s directed by Hetty Goldman. The new field project under the auspices of Boğaziçi University continues to engage with the finds of the stratified Early Islamic settlement. This talk will present a preview of architectural features, ceramics, small finds and other archaeological investigations of this period in preparation for publication.
This event is sponsored by the History of Art Department and the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations
