Elisabeth Durham, A Presence of Absence, 2019, inkjet print on linen

Friday, January 17, 2020 - 6:00pm to 9:00pm

FJORD Gallery, 1400 N American St #105, Philadelphia, PA 19122

Please join us at FJORD Gallery on Friday January 17 from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. for the opening of "Ways Away," an exhibition presented by the Incubation Series. This exhibition runs from January 17th through February 8th, 2020.

Sometimes the things that seem far away are actually much closer than initially imagined. This exhibition brings together five artists whose varying works contemplate the feelings of separation brought about by distance or time, and the familial bonds that persist, fade, or transform as a result. These works meditate on mental health legacies, cultural and generational divides, distant memories felt deeply in the present, and the transmutation of objects both mundane and divine. Drawing on a diverse range of media and practices, these artists point to what is perceived as far away—a memory, a mother, a tradition, or a home—and given them new form. This exhibition features the work of artists Elisabeth Durham, Jane Fentress, Xinyi Hu, Kyuri Jeon, and Sonnie Wooden. Co-organized by Meg Hankel (Bryn Mawr College) and Tyler Shine (UPenn).

This exhibition was made possible by the generous support of The Sachs Program for Arts Innovation, the History of Art Department, School of Arts and Sciences, and the Department of Fine Arts, Weitzman School of Design, University of Pennsylvania.
